Starz dramedy Sweetbitter renewed for season 2 has announced that their original series , based on the bestselling novel of the same name by Stephanie Danler, has been renewed for a second season. The series stars Ella Purnell (Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children) as Tess, alongside Caitlin Fitzgerald, Tom Sturridge, Paul Sparks, Evan Jonigkeit, Daniyar, Eden Epstein, and Jasmine Mathews. Chris Albrecht, the CEO of Starz, said: “Season one gave audiences a taste of the characters and backstory of an upscale New York restaurant, leaving them wanting more — which we will deliver with a second helping of Sweetbitter. The immersion of the audience into the world in and around the restaurant will deepen as the series looks further into the complexities of Tess’ awakening and the lives of her new friends and colleagues in the second season. Sweetbitter tells the story of Tess (Purnell), a 22-year-old who arrives in New York City ready to pursue a new life. When she’s invited to train at one of the best restaurants in the city, she thinks she’s found a steady income and a safe place to wait. But Tess is quickly intoxicated by the chaotic, adrenalized world behind-the-scenes: tasting expensive wine, exploring dive bars, and learning who she can trust. In season one, we follow Tess along the path of the L train circa 2006: the prestigious Manhattan restaurant where she serves an upscale clientele, an industry dive bar, a corner bodega in Williamsburg, and an East Village apartment with a bathtub in the kitchen. She came to the city without a friend or ambition because she wanted more from her life. Underneath the oysters and champagne is a love letter to the way New York City changes and can change you. But it’s the people Tess meets at the restaurant who end up marking her for life. Sweetbitter is not only Tess’s story — it is also the story of the backwaiters, servers, bartenders, and dishwashers as they navigate friendship, intimacy, lust, and betrayal. Her co-workers become her family, and through them she finds a degree of belonging that she’s never encountered before. Sweetbitter is a half-hour drama that illuminates the sensory journey of a developing palate. How the sweet, sour, salt, bitter, and umami threaten, complement, and ultimately need each other so that we can learn to taste. Danler serves as creator, executive producer, and writer on the series with Stu Zicherman serving as showrunner and executive producer along with Plan B. Season one of Sweetbitter premiered in March and ended in June after six episodes. Ten half-hour episodes have been ordered for the second season of Sweetbitter with a return date to be announced later. The post appeared first on .

Christina Applegate to star in, produce Netflix’s Dead to Me Christina Applegate will be returning to TV, for the first time in six years with a new half hour Netflix comedy, Dead to Me. The ten-episode series will reunite Applegate with Will Ferrell and Adam McKay, as the three are executive producing the series along with Jessica Elbaum (I’m Sorry) of Gloria Sanchez productions. Written by Liz Feldman (2 Broke Girls, The Great Indoors), the “a dark comedy about a powerful friendship that blossoms between a tightly-wound widow and a free spirit with a shocking secret”, and a “comedic Big Little Lies.” On the show Applegate will play Jen, “a poised and put-together woman with a dark sense of humor and an anger problem that she doesn’t necessarily want to deal with. Jen has been struggling to keep it together in the months since her husband was killed in a hit and run.” Mckay and Ferrell have been involved in creating all kinds of content lately, from Succession to CBS All Access’ No Activity. They are also set to work with Netflix on the Eurovision, which will star Ferrell. For Netflix, getting the highly sought after but highly selective Applegate to return to TV is a big win for the high paying streaming service. She has not starred in a series since NBC’s Up All Night, following her work on Samantha Who and Married With Children, but has consistently made big movies like the Anchorman and Bad Moms franchises. With star power like Applegate joining names like Ferrell and Mckay, Netflix is betting big on the dark comedy. Upcoming Karin Slaughter novel picked up for television Bruna Papandrea, the co-producer of acclaimed films Gone Girl and Wild and last year’s smash HBO series Big Little Lies, is expanding her new production company’s upcoming work by picking up the rights to the upcoming Karin Slaughter novel Pieces of Her. Made Up Stories will develop the project for the small screen with Endeavor Content. The novel, written by bestselling crime author Slaughter, follows a woman who discovers she doesn’t know everything about her mother when a shooter goes on a rampage in their local mall and her mother is the one who stops him dead, causing her life to unravel. The adaptation will be directed by Lesli Linka Glatter, the Emmy-nominated director behind episodes of Homeland and Mad Men, and will be developed by writer Charlotte Stoudt, who has worked on six seasons of the Showtime drama Homeland and on the upcoming final season of Netflix’s House of Cards. “From the moment I started reading Karin’s visceral new novel, I felt like there was nothing like it on TV – an emotional mother/daughter story living in the skin of a heart-pounding action thriller. I can’t think of a more perfect pairing than Lesli and Charlotte to translate Karin’s novel to the screen. It’s truly a dream team of female content creators,” Papandrea said of the new project. Papandrea will be producing the series through her new company with Jeanne Snow, Casey Harver and Steve Hutensky rounding out the production team. Pieces of Her is set to hit shelves for readers on August 21, published by William Morrow. The post appeared first on .

First Chilling Adventures of Sabrina poster debuts The first teaser poster for Netflix’s series has made its way online from Though there is still no premiere date set for the series, you can check out the full poster in the gallery below and look for more from the series to come during San Diego Comic-Con! Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is based on the comic book of the same name, which reimagines the origin and adventures of Sabrina the Teenage Witch as a dark coming-of-age story that traffics in horror, the occult and, of course, witchcraft. Tonally in the vein of Rosemary’s Baby and The Exorcist, this adaptation finds Sabrina wrestling to reconcile her dual nature — half-witch, half-mortal — while standing against the evil forces that threaten her, her family and the daylight world humans inhabit. Kiernan Shipka stars as Sabrina in the new series and is joined by Lucy Davis, Miranda Otto, Chance Perdomo, Michelle Gomez, Jaz Sinclair, Richard Coyle, Ross Lynch, and Bronson Pinchot in the cast. Now that the two shows are on different networks, It remains to be seen if there will be any formal association between Riverdale and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. The comic book series features brief appearances by Archie characters like Betty and Veronica, but it is primarily a self-contained narrative. Aguirre-Sacasa is writing the adaptation (the comic book basis for which he also wrote) and will executive produce. Lee Toland Krieger will direct and executive produce with Aguirre-Sacasa, Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Jon Goldwater. Although there is no premiere date yet for the series, the series has already been given a two season order at . The post appeared first on .

Julie Ann Emery joins Catch-22 series in recurring role has confirmed that Julie Ann Emery (Preacher, Better Call Saul, Fargo) has joined Hulu’s limited series from George Clooney, . The series is based on the satirical novel by Joseph Heller and will debut on Hulu in 2019. Emery will star alongside Clooney, Hugh Laurie, Kyle Chandler, and Giancarlo Giannini. The six-part adaptation of Catch-22 tells the story of U.S. Air Force bomber John Yossarian (Christopher Abbott) as he becomes frustrated with his position and the fact that so many people are trying to kill him even though they don’t know him and he doesn’t know them. He is also held up by the sinister rule that if a pilot is requesting to not do their missions, they are sane and ineligible to be removed from duty, whereas those who continue to fly into danger willingly are deemed insane. Emery will play Marion Scheisskopf, who’s married to Scheisskopf (Clooney), but having an affair with Yossarian (Abbott). Earthy and beautiful, she’s passionate but bored. Restless. A little sad, even. Yet alone with Yossarian, she’s mischievous and playful. She connects with him; it’s mental and intellectual as well as physical. She made a huge mistake marrying the awful Scheisskopf and dreams of a bigger life. Giannini is set to play the role of Marcello, the owner of a brothel in Rome. The debonair character challenges the Americans views on the world. Clooney will play the supporting role of Scheisskopf with Kyle Chandler playing Colonel Cathcart. Hugh Laurie and Christopher Abbott also star. The novel was previously adapted into a feature film directed by Mike Nichols in 1970, which wasn’t a success at the start but has since been considered a cult favorite by critics and audiences. The upcoming adaptation was written by Luke Davis and David Michod, and will be co-directed by Clooney, Grant Heslov (Argo) and Ellen Kuras (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) and produced by Paramount Television, Smokehouse Pictures and Anonymous Content. Davis, Michod, Clooney, Kuras, and Heslov will co-produce alongside Richard Brown and Steve Golin. (Photo Credit: Getty Images) The post appeared first on .

Dick Cheney interview teased for new Sacha Baron Cohen show Comedian has posted another teaser for his mysterious talk show project for , which reveals that the master stunt interviewer has landed none other than former Vice President Dick Cheney for what looks to be an insane sit down conversation. Check out the teaser for the Dick Cheney interview below! Considered by many to be the major architect of the Bush administration from 2001 to 2008, the 77-year-old Cheney will next be the subject of Oscar-winner Adam McKay’s biopic titled Backseat. Oscar-winner Christian Bale will play Cheney, with Oscar-winner Sam Rockwell as George W. Bush, Amy Adams as Lynne Cheney and Steve Carell as Donald Rumsfeld, with the film set to open on December 21, 2018. There has also been a sighting in the wild of stealth advertising for the show, one of which features the potential title “Who is America?” That title could just be an advertising tag, though. July 15, Showtime. — Jensen Karp (@JensenClan88) Da Ali G Show ran for three seasons on both Channel 4 and HBO, and involved segments featuring Cohen doing stunt interviews in disguise as his three signature characters of Ali G, Borat Sagdiyev and Brüno, all of whom eventually received movie spin-offs. The new series on Showtime will reportedly be similar, and feature stunts involving President Donald Trump as well as other celebrities, including a segment with OJ Simpson reportedly shot back in February in his Las Vegas hotel room. At least two episodes have already been produced, although it is not known if Cohen has created new characters or what the exact format will be. Cohen has a history with Trump, having duped the real estate magnate to do an on-camera interview with a ploy to pitch “Ice Cream Gloves” during a 2003 segment on Da Ali G Show. In the run-up to the 2016 election, Cohen shot a sequence for The Brothers Grimsby involving then-candidate Trump contracting HIV. The new Sacha Baron Cohen show will premiere on Showtime July 15. — Sacha Baron Cohen (@SachaBaronCohen) The post appeared first on .
