A trailer for next week’s episode of Arrow previews a showdown between Oliver (Stephen Amell) and the season 6 antagonist, Ricardo Diaz (Kirk Acevedo). The two have been on a collision course all season, with Diaz doing everything he can to dismantle Oliver’s life piece by piece.
In the beginning of the season, Team Arrow believed their main enemy to be the hacker, Cayden James (Michael Emerson), though this character was eventually revealed to be a red herring. The real threat was actually Diaz, a low-level drug dealer who slowly worked his way to the top. After using the money stolen by James, Diaz was able to buy off key figures of authority, allowing him to gain more control over Star City. His actions have shattered Team Arrow; Oliver is now on a one-man mission to defeat Diaz and take the city back.

The CW has released a trailer for next Thursday’s episode of Arrow, titled “Shifting Allegiances”. In the video, Lance (Paul Blackthorne) chides Oliver for being “scared of a thug like Diaz“. Oliver is apparently captured and bound in chains. Diaz challenges Oliver to a fight, and declares that the loser will leave Star City forever. Based on the trailer, Diaz is going to give Oliver all he can handle.
Both Oliver and Diaz have gone through a lot in the past few episodes. After losing his best friend, Diggle (David Ramsay), Oliver made the decision to shut down Team Arrow so that he can take on Diaz by himself. Meanwhile, Diaz has taken a different approach. Diaz was willing to relinquish control of Star City in exchange for “a seat at the table” alongside other powerful crime lords. As the two continue to clash, Oliver will be alone while Diaz will be surrounded by allies.
As for the upcoming showdown, Oliver could hold the advantage in the fight, considering that the character has received martial arts training from Shado’s father, Deathstroke, and Ra’s al Ghul. Diaz has proven in past episodes that he too is a trained fighter and expert in hand-to-hand combat. The extent of his abilities, however, has yet to be shown. It’s worth noting that Diaz’s comic book counterpart, Richard Dragon, has a reputation as one of the greatest martial artists in the DC Universe.
It remains to be seen how either character would react to losing. With four episodes left in the season, the dispute between Oliver and Diaz isn’t about to be resolved.
Arrow season 6 continues Thursday, April 26 with “Shifting Allegiances” on The CW.
